Student-Led Conferences
Preparation and practice are keys to successful student-led conferences, the extra effort to offer them is worth it for both parents and students. It might be the first time that the children are 'heard' and not 'talked at.' The conference puts the responsibility of the work more on the shoulders of the student, forcing all stakeholders to realise that the adults are present as supporters, not doers.
During student-led conferences, teachers act as facilitators as students review their work and progress with their parents. Often students work from a portfolio filled with assignments they have collected before the conference. Some teachers also provide checklists of items for students to cover during the conference or a rough "script" for them to follow.
In some schools up to 5 students and their parents are in the room at one time and the teachers job is to rove from conference to another.
